Pump Up the Volume: How to Make Thin Hair Look Thicker

Big hair

You might be surprised to hear that me and Homer Simpson have something in common, and it isn’t our mutual love of donuts…we both have thin hair. While Homer lost his hair through the stresses of being a father I was just born with thin hair; wispy, fly-away locks that just seems impossible to get any volume into. That combined with my tiny pea head, big eyes and sticky-out ears makes me look like an alien on a good day and Gollum (if you don’t know who that is, have you been living under a rock?) on a bad day.

I have tried so many things to try and make my hair look thicker and I finally got it sorted almost a year ago when I treat myself to a shorter layered haircut, trimmed with a razor to add texture, which gave my hair the thickness and volume I craved…hurray for magical texture. If I miss having long hair I simply clip in some hair extensions and off I go. I really do have the best of both worlds. However, you don’t have to resort to an extreme haircut to get thicker hair. There are other things you can try to pump up the volume of your hair.

1.) SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER: Although it isn’t very innovative there are some good volumising shampoos and conditioners out there that can add fullness to thin hair. Repeated use of these products will visibly boost the hair, while not changing the texture of the hair.

2.) GEL OR POWDER THICKENERS: Although they can be a little bit pricey, gel powders or thickeners are great for boosting the hair’s volume at the root. Dry shampoo can have a similar effect but won’t last as long.

3.) HAIRDRYING TRICKS: When blow-drying your hair stick your head upside down and the heat will fix the roots in that position, giving some Jedward-style lift.

4.) OPTICAL ILLUSION: Streaking your hair with a lighter shade will create the illusion of stronger and fuller hair. What a coincidence it is then that here at Hairbomb we have all you need to fulfil you’re hair dying needs.

5.) 80’s INSPIRATION: Yes a lot about hair in the 1980’s was so very wrong, but there was one thing they got right…crimpers. With a thin pair of crimpers, crimp the roots of the hair underneath to top layers and give a quick back comb for super volume.

So there you go, five sure fire tips to help boost volume in thin hair. If you need any more advice feel free to ask. Here at Hairbomb we are always willing to help.
