I never thought I would say that rubber-lipped, spitting-image a-like Steve Tyler was a style icon, but it’s true. He is a pioneer in the next new hottest hair trend that has been spreading across America for the past few months and is sure to hit the UK in a big way for summer. So what is the next big thing? I hear you cry…it is feather hair extensions. Aerosmith warbler, Steve Tyler helped the trend take of when he featured on American Idol with feathers in his locks. Many celebrities, such as Keisha and Jennifer Love Hewitt were soon to follow and then it was only a matter of time before it caught on with the general public.

The trend is of great appeal to bohemian hippy chicks like me as it gives a great Pocahontas/70’s hippy look that I think works great for summer with a maxi dress, flip flops and a pair of oversized sunnies. Plus is you get your feathers from a reputable seller the feathers will become one with your hair after washing and can last between 1 and 6 months. For me I probably wouldn’t wear them permanently, but instead perhaps sew them into my clip in hair extensions…I’m all about variety and versatility.
Sites are beginning to quickly pop up in the UK offering feather extensions in a range of colours and lengths. But if the trend is going to take off like it has in America you could be disappointed when you come to order and find the site has sold out. But don’t worry Gem is here with a solution. Head to your local outdoor store and head straight for the fishing aisle. No I’m not suggesting you get a big net to catch some birds to pluck out the feathers…that’s just awful. What I am suggesting is you purchase some of the long colourful feathers that fly fisherman use to tie their flies…genius right? Just as gorgeous as the ones available from your hair-dresser of extension website, you might find them to be just a little bit cheaper too.
If you want to buy into the feather trend, but don’t want to go the whole hog with extensions, try a hair band with feather details or simple feather clips. You can even make your own; your local haberdashery will have plenty of feathers you can choose from, along with beads, sequins or whatever else you might want. Attach to some hair clips or bobby pins and there you have it. That is the great thing about this trend it really is suitable for anyone, whether you want to go over the top or subtle, or whether your on a budget or want to blow the budget. So go on stick a feather in your cap.
