Week in, week out I blog about all the latest celeb hair adventures, but I have said very little about my own adventures through the wonderful world of hair. I may poke a little bit of fun at the odd celebrity hair disaster, yet I keep all my hair disasters (and triumphs – there has been a couple) to myself. So, here at Hairbomb we decided it was time that I shared some of my hairscapades with the loyal Hairbomb reader. I am by no means a ‘Hairbomb Hero’, but I’m hoping I can at least entertain you and I’m going to start off with ‘The Early Years’
So this brings me on to the picture of the little nippers in their school picture. The smaller one in the picture that looks a little bit like Kevin from The Wonder Years (those my age will know what I’m talking about), is me. The, all round neater and tidier girl in the picture is my older sister, Rachael. Back then I was known was being a bit of a mucky pup; the affectionate nickname my parents called me was ‘Scruff’ (and at 28 years of age, they still call me it now and then, usually when it will cause me the most embarrassment).
Bunches (albeit messy ones) we the hairstyle of choice back then, and they are a hairstyle I have revisited time and time again; when the Spice Girls were popular and when I played football for the school team (bunches made it harder for the dirty players to pull hair, and I hoped boys would think they were cute). They were also a popular look for keeping my hair out of my face when I worked in a lab during my time as a scientist. It was here that I would earn myself another nickname – Spaniel, for the spaniel-like (yes spaniel as in the dog) appearance the bunches gave me, what do you think? By the way I’m sorry about the posey-pouty Facebook picture, I’m as embarrassed about it as you are.
Anyway back to the early days. Growing up during the 80’s and 90’s meant that my path was sure to cross that of bad hair, which came in the form of crimpers. Now marketed as fashionable root boosters to give hair the perfect volume, back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, crimpers were used to crimp the entire hair. It gave that ‘dragged through a bush backwards’ (then beaten up by said bush) look that you just couldn’t achieve anywhere else. No photographic evidence remains of those days, they were inexplicably destroyed, but you can trust me when I say it wasn’t my best look.
Like most people it took some time for me to find the look and hairstyle that I felt suited me, so I know how it feels not to be so sure what do with my hair. So although we aren’t hair-care professionals here at Hairbomb, we are always wiling to give some advice and tips to anyone who asks for it. And readers, stay tuned for more of Gem’s Hair Adventures, both past and present.
