The Shades of Grey of Discrimination

Sandra Rawline

By now you probably know I like to take a little bit of tongue and cheek pop at the odd celebrity, but I’m gonna surprise you by leaving the world of celebrity behind (just for the day mind) and get a little but serious. There has been a story this week from our friends across the pond that has left me rather angry and I’m guessing it might make one or two of you angry too, so you might want a handy pillow nearby to punch the crap out of.

Perfectly professional Texan woman Sandra Rawline was sacked by her boss from her job at a real-estate firm for having grey hair. Can you bloody believe it? In August of 2009 Sandra’s boss told her to adopt a more ‘upscale image’ by wearing younger and fancier suits and dye over her grey locks.

Apparently, her boss offered to dye Sandra’s hair herself but when she refused to dye her hair, she was sacked within a week and replaced with someone ten years younger than her. Thankfully, Sandra is not lying down and taking it and she is instead suing her employer for unfair dismissal…you go girl.

Sandra says that her hair colour had never been a problem at the Texan firm and she even received employee of the year awards in 2004 and 2005, so I find it extra appalling that a company would sack an employee simply on the basis of their appearance.

Sandra went grey in her 20’s and as a result she feels like it is a part of who she is and why shouldn’t she be entitled to be who she is as long as she is doing her work well. It is a narrow-minded opinion to think that only certain type of appearance is acceptable. Here at Hairbomb we think you should be able to express yourselves however you please and we have dyes of every colour possible for you to do that. Here’s to you Sandra Rawline, take them for all they’ve got.

This is your friendly neighbourhood hair guru signing off...until next time citizens
