So on Tuesday I told you about the horror that has befallen everyone’s favourite loony tune, Lady Gaga. She is losing her hair and is soon to resemble Dr Evil (well probably not, but how funny would that be) after one hair dying disaster too many. Well you can imagine the joy we felt here at Hairbomb, when one of our lovely customers got it spot on; the lovely Lilly.
Luscious Lilly contacted us for some advice on how to turn her hair up to 11 and you better believe we were happy to oblige.
The Question: Naturally dark haired, my hair is currently half blonde and half purple; I’ve been using Schwarzkopf Mystic Violet and Absolute Platinum to dye my hair. I’ve bought your Shocking Blue Strength Bottle, is there anything you’d recommend to do to my hair before using it? And how can I make the colour stay vibrant for longer?
Lilly
The Hairbomb Gurus Say: Well the lucky Lilly informed us that she had lovely thick hair that was in good condition, which all made us a little green with envy. Lilly herself was concerned with going green dying platinum blonde hair blue.
Bleaching the hair will lift the platinum colour out, greatly reducing the green risk, however, this does add a little bit of extra hassle and damage and unless you want to end up like Lady Gaga (not, cuckoo bananas, but bald) you might choose not to take the bleaching route. But, even without bleach there are a number things you can do to ensure the best possible colour.
Make sure you do a skin test, even though the dyes are made up of mostly natural ingredients there is still the possibility of a reaction. Just think nettles are natural but you wouldn’t walk through a patch of those would you? And as far as I’m aware ‘The Elephant Man’ is not one of the hot looks of the season.
Hair should be clean and completely bone dry. For ideal results wash the hair with Fairy Liquid (is there anything it can’t do…yes lots, moving on) as it will strip the hair of natural oils, product build up and old hair colour. Rinse the hair thoroughly, forget to conditioner and dry the bejeebus out of your locks. Line the hairline and ears with Vaseline, it stops the dye from transferring to the skin and trust me, you want this.
Apply the dye thickly throughout the hair working in sections to get a consistent colour. On the sections, where green colouring is a concern apply a blast of heat with a hairdryer and then massage the hair to redistribute the colour. Cover the hair with your most unflattering shower cap and leave at least 45 minutes.
Wearing gloves wash the hair out, tipping the head upside down and only using cold water (beauty is pain) until the water runs clear. Apply a good colour care conditioner to the hair, massage gently and rinse once again until the water is clear.
Dry the hair using the lowest heat available and BAM gorgeous sapphire blue hair.
To keep the colour vibrant for longer, wash the hair as little as possible (within reason of course) and only use a super small amount of conditioner, rinsing with cool water. Adding a hint of colour to the conditioner is a great way to top the colour.
As you can see in the picture it worked beautifully. Lilly we salute you!!
