Choosing Hats for your Face Shape

Beatrice and Euginie

Earlier in the week I filled you in on the best and worst hats to be worn at the Royal Wedding (how glad am I that people have stopped yapping about that?). It surprised me how so many of them got it so wrong with a team of stylists and designers behind them. There really is no excuse for Princess Beatrice to be stepping out with a pair of fallopian tubes on her head, especially when there are some simple tips you can follow to find the right hat for your face shape. So whether it is for a wedding, a day at the races or just to cover a tremendously bad hair day (and lets face it, we have all had one or two of those- Jedward, I’m looking at you) choose a hat based on these tips.

Hats for an Oval or Heart Shaped Face

Angelina Jolie

If you have an oval face, like the exquisite Angelina Jolie and perhaps the not more exquisite me, you are lucky that almost any kind of hat. However, the danger is that oval faces can look slightly long and ‘horsey’ if the hat is worn the wrong way. So wear peaked hats across the forehead at an angle to break up the face.

Hats for a Round Face

Kirsten Dunst

If you have a round face, like weirdly attractive Kirsten Dunst, the most important thing is to prevent your head from looking as round and as spherical as an orange. Choose a hat with a high, asymmetrical crown such as a trilby or cowboy style hat. Don’t choose an over embellished piece; choose something with clean lines to give your globe head (sorry) more angles.

 Hats for a Square Face

Jessica Simpson

If you have a square face, like sweet simpleton Jessica Simpson, it’s important to avoid angular hats as this is sure to give you spongebob syndrome. Choose hats that have curvy lines and are soft and feminine to lessen all of the angles of your box-head (sorry). Hats with large or upturned brims work really well with your face shape, so go big and beautiful.
