Earlier in the week, we discussed whether original or remake did it better in creating the Lisbeth Salander character for the film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Lisbeth Salander is a tough and edgy, yet fragile and beautiful girl, with a fantastic punk meets goth ‘look’. Well if you have seen the movie, which is brilliant by the way (particularly the original), we thought we would give you a few little tips, in case you wanted to try out the ‘Lisbeth look’ for yourself.
Firth things first, the colour – Lisbeth’s hair is the darkest black, so good choices of shade would be Directions’ Ebony and Manic Panic’s Raven, both of which are deep shades of black. For a slight twist on the Lisbeth look, choose a dark coloured shade such as the purple-black Purple Passion from Rusk, the blue-black Midnight Blue from Directions, or the super dark Green Envy from Manic Panic.
Once you have your hair dyed a suitably gothic shade, its time to style the hair in signature Lisbeth fashion. The iconic Lisbeth look has to be her exquisitely styles Mohawk, something which I plan to try for myself many times. So obviously styling a Mohawk is going to be different depending on the length of hair, so let’s tackle short hair first.

Short Hair Mohawk
1.) Wash and towel dry hair – for best results it is advised that you don’t condition the hair.
2.) Using finger, apply a generous amount of a strong hold hair gel.
3.) As you blow dry with a comb (or for a rougher look your fingers) create the spikes as desired by holding the spiked sections of the Mohawk under the hairdryer (be careful with the hairdryers heat of course).
4.) Why the spikes have dried into place, apply a liberal amount of a firm hold hairspray and gently blow dry the style. The heat from the hair dryer will help ensure that the style will hold its form.
5.) Finish off the look with a shine spray and your Lisbeth Mohawk is ready to go.
Long Hair Mohawk
1.) Follow step 1 of the short hair Mohawk guide and roughly blow dry your hair upside down, until the hair is almost dry.
2.) Section of the sides of your hair front to back and section by section twist, or French plait the sections up to about an inch from the top of the head and secure tightly with a bobby pin and a spritz of hairspray. Leave the ends of the hair loose for now. Once you get toward the back of the head, twist or plait the sections to an inch from the middle of the back of the head, once again securing tightly and leaving the hair loose.
3.) Backcomb the loose hair until you achieve the desired volume and shape and secure in place with a firm hold hairspray. For a different take on the Mohawk, you can curl the loose stands of hair for a chic 80’s look.
4.) Finish off the whole look with a shine spray and you are good to go.
If you do attempt the look a home we would love to see some pictures, so please share them with us via our Twitter or Facebook pages, or through our forum.
