dip dye tutorial

Hi there,

i wanted to dip dye my hair like this photo and i was wondering what colours (blue and pink) you would advise me to use? and do you have any steps how to dip dye? I don't want to spend anymore than 10 pounds on each colour.

Thank you very much!

Hello there

Thanks for getting in touch - great question...

The two colours I suggest you use are

If when you open the tub, the colours seem a little dark, you can mix in some standard hair conditioner to water the colours down. Directions are really good value for money, and are a really easy to use consistency.

If you want to spend a bit more money, go for

Although Manic Panic’s equivalent blue is more green than the girl in the image.

If your hair is already light blonde, then I don’t think you need to bleach it any further. Check out our Ultimate hair dye tutorial post to to get your hair in the best place to take the colour and always do a skin allergy test as described on the product directions.

The girl in the photo has dip dyed in a really gorgeous haphazard way, leaving some of her ends blonde, which I think really works. If you want to leave some areas too, lather them in conditioner (to form a barrier) and if possible tie them up into a bun on the top of your head.

If you want the horizontal line of the colours to be really neat, dip a tint brush in conditioner and draw a line across your hair so the conditioner covers the edge of where you want to finish, and about an inch or more above this. Again this will give you a really good protective barrier. Vaseline is even better, but I find it harder to wash out afterwards. Don’t let the conditioner go on the area you want to colour.

Take about a ½-1 cm strand of hair in one hand, and a splodge of dye in the other. Holding the strand out, lather it with the dye just along the conditioner line, gently smooth the dye in down to the tips. If you are really keen for the colours not to mix, cover the coloured area in a length of clingfilm. Repeat this 4 or 5 times with spaces in between. Then take the other colour dye and repeat in alternate areas.

Leave the colour in for at least 15 minutes. When you wash the product out, don’t wash your whole head at first. If you want really neat results, take each section separately and rinse in a downward vertical motion. Then shampoo and condition the section. Or you can rinse the whole dip dyed are in a downward vertical motion, the colours shouldn’t mix too much.

Quite a long tutorial, but I hope it helps somewhat and happy dip dyeing!

So lovely! I love this look!!! I have a long hair too, but I don't know if Pink and Blue would suit my brown hair...Can you please advise me? Do I have to colour my hair first with light mahogany colour? or just leave it that way and have it dyed with pink and blue?
